Obituary
Maureen Edna Koon Hagwood, daughter of the late Perry and Thelma Koon was born in Newark, NJ on April 18, 1944. She was the eighth of seventeen children. On August 2, 2024, Maureen made her transition to be with the Lord. Maureen was educated through the Newark, NJ school system and graduated from Central High School. Shortly thereafter she was blessed with three amazing children, Victoria April Jackson, Edward Bryant Koon, and Corey Tamar Koon. On February 12, 1972, Maureen married the late Julius A. Hagwood. Maureen was employed by Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, Morris County, NJ, and the Union County Juvenile Detention Center. Maureen accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age at the Mt. Teman AME Church, Elizabeth, NJ. Later Joining the Aenon Baptist Church, Union, NJ. Maureen sang on the W.T. Williams Mass Choir along with singing on the New Hope Missionary Association Choir. She did so with joy until her health failed. Affectionately known by her nieces and nephews as “Mean Maureen”. Maureen loved her family even with her sharp tongue. She was the caregiver for her mother and father until their passing. She loved playing softball and listening to gospel music on the gospel radio stations often winning gifts from them. Maureen was predeceased by her husband Julius A. Hagwood; son Corey Tamar Koon; siblings Perry Daniel, Jesse Alvin, Peggy (John), Paul David, Joseph Alonzo, Shirley Ann, Ronald William, Twins Douglas Fredrick and Phillip, Diana Maria, Barbara Jean, Janette Heddy, Kenneth Reginald, Carlton James and Thelma; godmothers Alma Ramey and Grace Irving. Maureen’s legacy lives on in the hearts of one daughter Victoria April, one son; Edward Bryant, eight grandchildren; Sharif, PJ, Aaliyah, Marcus, LaQuan, Briana, Tyler, and Alexandra; thirteen great-grandchildren; Kiara, Ali, Yayah (Arelis), Amari, Amara, Carter, Jheki, A’zahi, La’ziyah, Asiyah, A’syn, Amir, Kash and Miracle; brother Darryl (Teressa), three sister in-laws Peggy, Millie, and Christine; a devoted friend Marie Burke and many nieces, nephews, and cousins and friends she loved dearly.
